Cannabis just keeps getting better every year. New strains appear and get added to an already dizzying selection.

In 2003, the average THC level was 6.4% - 7%, depending on the study. In the mid-90s, it was about 4%. Now it’s up to 15% - 20%. That’s just the average, so some are much higher than that.

At the time of this writing, it’s getting close to planting time, which means…

It may be time to buy some seeds.

We’ll look at some of the best new innovations in strain development in a few categories, some oldies but greaties, and where to buy seeds for them. All of them are accessible in the USA as souvenirs.

To keep the narc-looking guy who’s watching me pull up a bunch of weed images at the bar satisfied, here’s a friendly reminder to obey all your state, provincial, national, and local laws. And just say no. Nancy Reagan was a saint. I have a full size poster of her alongside William Bennett.

Mold & Mildew Resistant

Super Silver Haze

This is a masterpiece creation that won three High Times Cannabis Cups in a row. It’s not a new strain, but it’s not going obsolete any time soon either.

If you live in a high moisture area, Super Silver Haze is a great sativa to add to your grow because… well, mold sucks.

According to Leafly, Super Silver Haze gives you “some of the most robust citrus and spice flavor on the market.”

Both THC and CBD levels are on the high end, roughly 18% and 10% respectively.

The buzz is relaxing and energizing without any threat of couchlock. It may transport you to Cloud 9 while you remain anchored to Earth with a solid body high. Pack some snacks for the journey because you might need them.

The genetics of this strain come from Skunk #1, Northern Lights, and Haze.

Grow it indoors or outdoors.

Seed Type: Feminized

Flowering Time: 65 Days

Outdoor Harvest: Mid-October

Indoor Yield: 19 oz per square meter

Outdoor Yield: 15oz per plantplant

Where to Buy Seeds

Buy Super Silver Haze at the ILGM seed bank. They ship your souvenirs to the USA if that’s where you’re based.

Autoflowering

Royal Gorilla Automatic

The greatest thing about autoflowering is that it produce buds faster. Forget waiting for an October harvest. With Royal Gorilla Automatic seeds, you can harvest from June through October. The flowering time for this strain is five to seven weeks. It may take eight to 10 weeks from germination before it’s time to pluck.

If your grow needs to be stealth, this strain will reach heights from 24 to 55 inches outdoors and up to 48 inches indoors. It’s not the dwarfiest of dwarfs, but it’s nice and compact.

THC level is usually over 20%, and there isn’t much CBD.

Expect an aroma of citrus, berry, and pine balanced with a lot of diesel. The buds are very gooey.

The genetics come from Cookies, Gorilla, and cannabis ruderalis.

Dang it. I forgot to describe the high.

Royal Queen Seeds, creators of this strain, say: “While skewing mostly toward indica, there will also be a cerebral head high to look forward to.”

They also describe it as “stoned, physically and mentally.” Expect couchlock at some point after an initial head buzz. Overall, you can count on a “combined head-body effect” due to 30% sativa and 50% indica genetics.

As of this writing, Royal Gorilla Automatic has 525 reviews and an average rating of 4.5/5 on its home website.

The strain is easy to grow and works best for those who use the SOG method. You can use minimal nutrients for it, too.

Outdoor Yield: 4oz – 5.5oz (dried) per plant

Indoor Yield: 11oz – 12oz per square meter

Where to Buy Seeds

Royal Queen Seeds doesn’t ship to the USA, but you can buy this strain from The Seedsman.

Highly Potent

Godfather OG

While one website claimed this Southern California strain is at least 34% THC, Leafly says it only goes as high as 28%. That’s still nothing to sneeze at.

Rumor has it that Godfather OG is a mix of Granddaddy Purple, OG Kush, and Cherry Pie. REALITY has it that the breeder crossed Alpha OG and XXX OG to create “The Don of All OG’s.” Both parent strains do have OG Kush in their genes.

This is not a brand new strain. In fact, it won the 2013 High Times Cannabis Cup in Los Angeles for the Best Indica Strain category.

195 Leafly reviewers gave an average rating of 4.5/5. Dominant characteristics of the buzz are relaxed (81%) and sleepy (60%) followed by happy and euphoric. It scores pretty low on the negatives like dry mouth (25%) and paranoid (5%). Medicinal users enjoy the strain’s ability to relieve insomnia, pain, and stress.

Seed Type: Feminized

Flowering Time: 55-65 days

Indoor Yield: Up to 15oz per square meter

Outdoor Yield: Up to 20oz per plant

Where to Buy Seeds

If you’re in the USA, you can buy them from Pacific Seed Bank.

Sweet & Powerful

Wedding Flowers

Dr. Krippling is a madman, and a very good one. Wedding Flowers is a recent strain of his and a reworking of ILGM’s Wedding Cake. Wedding Cake is a child of two proud parents: Girl Scout Cookies and Cherry Pie.

Wedding flowers is an indica/sativa hybrid that can grow more than 10 feet tall outdoors and between three and six feet indoors. Yields never seem to disappoint.

The THC Level is up to 20% and CBD is pretty low. While that’s nothing to sneeze at, Wedding Cake’s potency is 25% or higher.

The bud aroma is a mix of berry, citrus-like fruitiness, and overall sweetness with some diesel notes. The flavor is rich and perfumy while Wedding Cake’s is more of an earthy vanilla flavor that is also sweet with spicy pepper notes.

Indoor Yield: 20oz – 25oz per square meter

Indoor Flowering Time: 56-90 days

Outdoor Harvest: Mid-October

Seed Type: Feminized
